About
Rahima A. Bhanji, MD, MSc, FRCPC went to medical school at the University of Alberta. She received her training in Internal medicine, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology at the University of Alberta. Her training in Hepatology was supported by Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver Clinical Fellowship. She then completed an advanced Transplant Hepatology Research Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, USA. Rahima Bhanji also holds a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. In January 2018, she was appointed as the Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta. She is a consultant in gastroenterology and hepatology.
Dr. Bhanji provides clinical care for patients with chronic liver disease and end-stage liver disease needing liver transplantation and post-transplant care.
Areas of clinical expertise include:
- Managing patients with end-stage liver disease
- Providing care after liver transplantation
- Improving long-term outcomes after liver transplantation, including complications related to immunosuppression, metabolic abnormalities, renal dysfunction and cardiovascular disease
Dr. Bhanji holds an administrative position in the Liver transplant Center at the University of Alberta. She is active in teaching and mentoring trainees at various levels and has published numerous papers in high-impact scientific journals.
Dr. Bhanji allocates 30 percent of her time to research. Her research interest lies in the field of liver transplantation. Her goals are to provide health care through disease prevention, creation of strategies to improve outcomes, early detection of and appropriate management of disease recurrence after liver transplantation.
