About
Personal Statement:
"High blood pressure is the leading cause of death and disability in the world, affecting nearly 1.5 billion people. Accurate measurement, monitoring, and evidence-based treatment are critical. My goal is to improve blood pressure diagnosis and management locally, nationally, and globally."
Dr. Raj Padwal is a General Internal Medicine Specialist, Clinical Pharmacologist, and Clinical Epidemiologist with expertise in hypertension, cardiovascular health, digital health, and technology assisted care. He has conducted research spanning the entire health services spectrum, including large scale administrative database analyses (MSc done at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto), cross-sectional analyses of Canadian national survey data, primary data collection and longitudinal data analysis (cohort studies in bariatric populations and NHANES), systematic review/meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and creation of national clinical guidelines.
He is the Director of the Hypertension Dyslipidemia Clinic at the University of Alberta. He has served as past Chair of the Hypertension Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines and Board Member of Hypertension Canada. In addition, he serves as a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and International Standards Organization (ISO) Syphygmomanometer committees, contributing to blood pressure measurement validation standards development globally. He is a Board Member of the World Hypertension League and expert volunteer to the Pan American Health Organization, in his efforts to improve global hypertension control.
He is also CEO of mmHg Inc., digital health company specialising in medical software development and cloud-based solutions for remote patient monitoring, patient activation, and evidence-based care.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Padwal is Director of the University of Alberta Hypertension Clinic and specialises in the care of patients with resistant hypertension and secondary hypertension. He oversees the 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring program at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic.
Research
Dr. Padwal’s research in blood pressure measurement and technology-assisted care focuses on inventing more accurate methods of blood pressure measurement and better ways to use technology to improve hypertension diagnosis and control.Dr. Padwal’s research has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, National Research Council, Alberta Innovates, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, and Women and Children’s Health Research Foundation.
Dr. Padwal received the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s Paul W. Armstrong Excellence in Research Award in 2017 and Hypertension Canada’s Senior Investigator Award in 2014. He has received many other awards throughout his training and career for research, mentoring and teaching.
