About

Dr. Richard You Wu is an Assistant Professor and Clinician-Scientist in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta. After completing his Bachelor of Health Sciences (Intestinal Physiology, Pharmacology) at McMaster University, he completed his combined MD/PhD training at the University of Toronto, specializing in Cell Biology and Mucosal Immunology studying the role of dietary agents on intestinal epithelial barrier and innate immune signaling. Following his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship in Toronto, he pursued advanced subspecialty training through an IBD fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and the MILESTONE IBD Program at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Wu was previously the recipient of the CIHR Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, the University of Toronto Department of Medicine Resident Researcher of the Year Award, the Dr. Gordon Greenberg GI Resident Researcher of the Year Award, and the Clifford Ottaway Award for Clinical Teaching.

Research

Dr. Wu's research focuses on characterizing early risk factors and disease mechanisms to establish actionable prediction and prevention strategies for chronic GI conditions, such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). By leveraging multi-omic biomarkers, his program aims to predict disease onset, flare activity, and clinical trajectories to intercept high-risk individuals early on.

Teaching

Dr. Wu previously served on the admission committee for Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology fellowship training. He helped design the Gastroenterology curriculum lectures for Internal Medicine Royal College boards at University of Toronto. He also served as CBL tutors at University of Toronto and University of Alberta.
