About

Dr. Daniel Sadowski is Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta and also Physician Lead for Quality in the Alberta Colorectal Cancer Screening Program. He received his MD from the University of Saskatchewan in 1984 and completed his Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Calgary in 1992. During his career, Dr. Sadowski has been an advocate for organized colon cancer screening programs at the national, provincial, and regional levels. From 1998-2000 he served as a member of the National Committee on Colorectal Cancer Screening sponsored by Health Canada. He participated in the development of Clinical Practice Guidelines on Colon Cancer Screening guidelines for the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology in 2004 with an update in 2010. Provincially, he served as Co-Chair of the Alberta Colorectal Cancer Screening Program Screening Protocols Working group, which laid the foundation for a provincial screening program. From 2005-2007 he served on the Digestive Health Program for Colon Cancer Prevention, which was the forerunner of the SCOPE Program now responsible for delivering colorectal cancer screening to the Edmonton zone. 

Dr. Sadowski’s other clinical interests are in esophageal motility disorders and inflammatory bowel disease. He served as director of the GI Motility Lab at the University Hospital, Edmonton from 2004-2010. His research interests are in the diagnosis and epidemiology of achalasia, the diagnosis and management of GERD and the influence of bariatric surgery on foregut function. He has served as a member of various CAG sponsored consensus panels on issues such as GERD, bowel preparation for colonoscopy, patient wait times and colonic polyp surveillance. He served as moderator for the CAG Clinical Practice Guidelines on Crohn’s disease in 2009, video capsule endoscopy in 2015, pediatric Crohn’s disease in 2019 and bile acid diarrhea in 2020. 

Dr. Sadowski has also provided leadership to the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology serving as Chair of the Practice Affairs Committee (2002-2005), VP Clinical Affairs (2007-2009), President-Elect (2010-2012), President (2012-2014) and Past-President (2014-2016). 


Outside medicine, Dr. Sadowski is an avid canoeist - each spring he goes completely off the grid to paddle the rivers of Canada’s great north. He is interested in music and plays the piano and classical guitar. He normally has 4-5 books on the go at any one time in the areas of history (particularly WW2) and popular science.

  • quality outcomes in colorectal cancer screening
  • post - colonoscopy colon cancer
  • implementation of the C-GRS as a quality metric in endoscopy units
