About
Welcome to CSAR, the Centre for the Studies of Asphyxia and Resuscitation, a world-leading program that is unique in Canada.
CSAR’s research focus is to 1) understand basic respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological and metabolic changes during fetal to neonatal transition and 2) improve diagnoses, mitigate risk and improve survival and quality of life for newborns. CSAR is a leading training and innovation centre in neonatal asphyxia and resuscitation research, and a leader in research translation to policy. CSAR is developing new research directions, influences guideline development and policy statements for national and international health communities.
CSAR integrates an excellent research team with a focus on asphyxia and resuscitation, and on follow-up for outcomes (e.g. chronic lung disease and neurodevelopmental delays). CSAR studies asphyxia and resuscitation ranging from basic to clinical research. In the delivery rooms CSAR uses a unique recording system, which continuously measures respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological and metabolic changes during fetal to neonatal transition.
Between 2014 and 2020, Dr. Georg Schmolzer (Director of CSAR) was the inaugural Heart and Stroke Foundation Professorship in Neonatal Resuscitation .
Research
Globally, 15 million newborns are born prematurely and 20% of them require support at birth; annually, ~1 million of these will die due to birth asphyxia. A significant proportion of these critically ill newborns survive with chronic lung disease or neurodevelopmental disabilities. This puts a heavy burden on health resources, as these infants require frequent hospital re-admission. Refining resuscitation techniques to decrease long-term complications has potential to improve quality of life for newborns and their families.?
CSAR's focus is to 1) understand basic respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological changes during the fetal to neonatal transition and 2) improve diagnoses, mitigate risk and improve survival and quality of life for newborns. Improving neonatal outcomes requires specialized, interdisciplinary centres such as CSAR, which combine basic, clinical and translational research.
Current Reserach Focus include:
1) RETAIN to teach neonatal Resuscitation
2) Neonatal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
3) Infant and Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
4) Clinical trials in Neonatal Medicine
Teaching
Teaching philosophy:
My teaching and mentorship philosophy aims to provide the best possible learning environment with genuine one-on-one mentorship and true dedication that all my trainees are successful and become their best, well-rounded selves. My philosophy encourages my students to develop their own autonomy by encourage them to problem-solve and work independently, while simultaneously providing ample support and guidance so that they are never overwhelmed nor discouraged.
A further principle is the emphasis on using an interdisciplinary research approach for all trainees, to create a distinctive, creative, collaborative, and highly productive learning environment. This well-thought-of training environment is integrated into an innovative, hypothesis-driven, and clinically relevant research program. Most importantly, I have a sincere interested in the future goals of each trainee, their interests outside of research, and I actively encourage them to achieve their potential across all their endeavors.
EDUCATIONAL PRODUCTS
RETAIN Table-top and Digital Simulator
Approximately 10% of newborn infants require some help with their breathing at birth. Neonatal resuscitation is taught through a simulation based training program around the world. Such a training methodology is cost and resource intensive which reduces its availability thereby adversely impacting skill acquisition and retention. Therefore, we (Schmlzer, Brown, Cutumisu, von Hauff, Jeffrey) created the RETAIN table-top and digital simulator (REsuscitation TrAIning for Neonatal residents) to complement the existing neonatal training. Both can be easily accessed by healthcare professionals anywhere at their convenience. We have completed several studies comparing the RETAIN simulator with the current approach and reported significant improved knowledge retention when using RETAIN.
