Research

My Master's research explores the experiences of underrepresented students who have participated in a pathway program as they pursue admission to physiotherapy school. The literature defines pathway programs as pre-admission strategies which are designed to provide students with equitable access and essential skills for professional programs such as physiotherapy (Parsons et al, 2022). These initiatives, which have only recently gained attention in rehabilitation, can include academic preparation, mentorship, summer camps, early clinical exposure, shadowing, and financial support.

However, literature is scarce within Canadian rehabilitation concerning the impact, structure, execution, accessibility, and, imporatntly, the student perceptions and experiences of these programs. My research aims to fill this gap by exploring student experiences to build a compelling evidence base demonstrating the benefits of supporting such diversity initiatives. Furthermore, I aim to provide a framework for professional bodies and academic institutions to guide the development of effective pathway programs, using the successful and challenging experiences of past participants.
