About

Personal Statement:
My overall career goal is to improve cardiovascular care through clinical practice, research, teaching, advocacy and professionalism.  This multi-pronged approach provides me with many opportunities to contribute to improving cardiovascular care across different dimensions.

Dr. Sheri Koshman received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy with Distinction from the University of Alberta and her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of British Columbia.  Subsequently, she completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Ambulatory Cardiology with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta.  She was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2013.

In 2018, she was named a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Koshman is a Clinical Pharmacist who practices in the Heart Function Clinic and Cardio-Oncology Clinic at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.  She is one of the first 15 pharmacists in Canada to be granted independent prescribing and practices to full scope, including performing physical examination.

In addition to her clinical practice in heart failure, Dr. Koshman is also a leader in this field in Canada.  She is a past primary panel member of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Heart Failure Guideline Committee and is a member of the Alberta Health Services Strategic Clinical Network Heart Failure Working Group.  She developed the first mobile app for clinicians, Med-HF App, that helps front line practitioners better manage heart failure medications.

Research

Dr. Koshman’s clinical research focuses on the use of pharmacotherapy in cardiovascular disease, including secondary prevention, atrial fibrillation and heart failure.  She also has an interest in the professional practice of pharmacists.  She has published numerous articles as an author and co-author in such peer-reviewed scientific journals as JAMA Internal Medicine, Archives of Internal Medicine, the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, and the American Journal of Cardiology.

Dr. Koshman developed the Alberta Pharmacy Residency Research Program and is a research advisor for the Alberta Pharmacy Residency Program at Alberta Health Services.  In this role, she supports novice researchers developing skills in research through a structured program and hands-on training.

Teaching

Dr. Koshman teaches across a spectrum of learners with a focus in cardiovascular disease.  She teaches undergraduate medical and pharmacy students regularly and is involved in continuing pharmacy and medical education.  Teaching activities include course development, lecturing, small group facilitation and clinical teaching.  Dr. Koshman is a clinical academic colleague with the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.  She has received Preceptor of the Year Awards for the Alberta Pharmacy Residency Program and the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Doctor of Pharmacy Program.  She is most passionate about clinical teaching and focusing on the practical application of pharmacotherapy.

With the goal of training advance practice pharmacists in cardiovascular care, Dr. Koshman has supervised Cardiology Fellows and has recently designed and developed the first Year 2 Advanced Pharmacy Residency in cardiology in Canada.  This program is aimed at developing advanced pharmacist clinicians with skills in inter professional collaboration, research, academic teaching and quality improvement with a focus on cardiovascular disease.
