Background

 Dr Nayar was appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta and a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist at the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM), Canada in July 2013.

Dr Nayar graduated from Government Dental College in Calicut in Kerala, India in 1993. After completion of post-graduation degree (MDS) in Prosthodontics from Manipal University, India, he worked as a Prosthodontist in the Middle East before embarking on further specialist clinical training in the United Kingdom where he was awarded Specialty Memberships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRDRCS) and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (MRDRCPS). He subsequently was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FDSRCS). During his specialist clinical training, he also embarked on a Research Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree that was awarded in 2012.

He was a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Oral rehabilitation and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer/Hon. Consultant in the UK since 2009. 

In Canada, his clinical work includes restorative rehabilitation of patients with Head and Neck Oncology utilizing digital design and simulation.  His current research interest includes the use of digital technologies and additive manufacturing in advanced jaw reconstruction and maxillofacial prosthodontics; the development of virtual reality planning and educational software; use of AI in the diagnosis of adverse tissue reaction around osseointegrated implants, methods to reduce the effects of radiotherapy to head and neck cancer patients among others. He also manages the advanced jaw reconstruction workshop in Edmonton, Canada.; He chairs the "Oral and Dental Care clinical guideline review team" for the Provincial Head and Neck Tumour Team.   

He is the Immediate Past President of the British Society of Prosthodontics 2023-24.  He is the Hon. Web Editor of the European Prosthodontic Association since 2008 and has been the Hon Secretary of the British Society of Prosthodontics from 2009 -2012. He was an examiner for the Dental Membership exam (MJDF) of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and for the Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) conducted by the General Dental Council (GDC) of the United Kingdom from  2007 - 2013.  He was also the Regional Advisor in Restorative Dentistry for the Royal College of Surgeons of England from 2010 to 2013.  

He founded the Head and Neck Cancer Support Society in 2018, the first in Canada.  He was awarded the Covenant Health Mission Award in 2016 & 2019 and the Covenant Health Recognition Award in 2021.
