DES 393 - Visual Communication Design Foundations I

Understanding and applying the principles of visual communication design. Study of communication concerns through the use of type and image creation. Emphasis on appropriateness, clarity, expression and description to meet defined objectives in print and digital media. Introduction to design research methods. Prerequisites: ART 134 and DES 135, or ART 136 and DES 138, or consent of the Department. Note: Not open to students with credit in DES 390.


DES 394 - Foundations of Visual Communication Design II

Continuing study of the principles of visual communication design. Study of communication concerns through the integration of photography and typography. Emphasis on appropriateness, clarity, expression and description. Introduction to information and publication design problems. Introduction to the computer as a tool for language and visual communication. Prerequisites: DES 393, and consent of Department. Note: Not open to students with credit in DES 390.


DES 495 - Imagery for Communication

Further studies in the use of photographic and illustrative imagery in the design context. Representation, description, expression and persuasion as the communicative function of the image. Prerequisites: DES 393 and one of DES 394, 395 or 396 or consent of the Department. Note: while not required, taking DES 493 before or at the same time as DES 495 is recommended.


DES 496 - The Image II

Complex image creation for communicational purposes mainly in electronic media. Introduction to criticism. Prerequisite: DES 493 and corequisite: DES 494 and consent of Department.


DES 597 - Design Management

Goal setting, creative collaboration, working in a team environment, project tracking, and administration. Brand management and identity application. Pre- or corequisite: DES 593 or DES 500 or consent of the Department.
