About

Dr. Adrian Wagg is a specialist in Geriatric and General Medicine with expertise in health services research.  He is currently a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta and Professor of Continence Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He is Deputy Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta. Dr. Wagg has significant front-line experience in healthcare administration and systems development, a strong knowledge of operational issues and an in-depth perspective of healthcare of older Albertans. Dr. Wagg holds the Alberta Health Services Chair in Healthy Ageing. His research interests involve improving care for people with urinary incontinence, community engagement and the quality of care for older people in nursing homes. He is active in national and international clinical practice guideline development and is the  Co-Chair of the International Consultation on Incontinence; prior to this he was General Secretary of the International Continence Society. In his service to the community, Dr. Wagg is President of the Canadian Continence Foundation and participates in numerous other activities promoting health literacy and the healthy ageing of seniors.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Wagg performs inpatient and outpatient geriatric and internal medicine in the elderly and runs a specialist continence clinic for people with bladder and bowel problems.

Research

Dr. Wagg developed an academic interest in incontinence and has gone on to be internationally recognised for his expertise in the area.    His other research interests are community engagement for healthy ageing, knowledge translation and quality improvement in older residents of nursing homes.  He has a number of grants, held as principal investigator and also is involved in a number of teams and collaborations with respect to improvements in Seniors care.0 including that of Indigenous peoples in NorthWest Territories.  ORCiD: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5372-530X

Teaching

Dr. Wagg is an acknowledged high quality teacher.  His clinical teaching covers undergraduate and post graduate students.  Teaching covers basic clinical skills, geriatric and general medical subjects either in small groups or at the bedside.He has undergone teacher training and holds a qualification in medical education

He also delivers a community engagement series of lectures for Seniors' centres around Edmonton, covering the topics that no-one else covers (those below the belt) including ones that others do as well as a monthly webinar on healthy aging for seniors, posted on the web and widely viewed on youTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrOqkQAkc-mJCHXEf1DtAXw/videos)

He also works with the Alzheimer Society as part of their seeds of hope programme.
