About

Personal Statement:
I am a General Internist with clinical expertise in caring for pregnant patients with medical complications. My practice and research focus on developing interventions that can reduce maternal complications and, consequently, long-term health complications. Maternal complications are independent predictors of vascular diseases later in life. As a clinical leader, I focus on Quality Improvement projects that improve the quality and effectiveness of care to the medical patients. 

Dr. Winnie Sia is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta. She did her internal medicine residency training at the University of Alberta, and then completed a two-year fellowship at Brown University, Providence, USA, in obstetric medicine (or medical complications in pregnancy).

Leadership and Collaborations:
Dr. Sia is Site Chief of Medicine at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. She was the head of Internal Medicine section at the RAH for 6 years. She is the program director for the Obstetric Medicine Fellowship Program at University of Alberta and Chair of the national Obstetric Medicine Fellowship Committee. Dr. Sia is on the Executive Council of the International Society of Obstetric Medicine.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Sia is a full-time medical staff member at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and a member of the Women & Children’s Health Research Institute at the University of Alberta. Her outpatient practice is primarily pregnant women with medical complications. As well, she is the director of the Postpartum Preeclampsia Clinic, a postpartum vascular risk reduction clinic for women who had hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. She is a consultant for hospitalized pregnant patients, as well as an attending physician on the General Medicine wards.

Research

Dr. Sia has been conducting clinical research in medical complications of pregnancy since her fellowship in obstetric medicine. Her current research areas lie in two broad categories. The first area is in pregnancy, specifically with regards to thrombosis, preeclampsia and their diagnostic tests. The second area is in the effects of medical complications in pregnancy, such as preeclampsia, on the long-term vascular health of women. 

She has authored and co-authored numerous articles in leading journals in the obstetrics field including Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada, and Obstetric Medicine, the journal for medical problems in pregnancy. She is a contributor to Approach to Internal Medicine: A Resource Book for Clinical Practice.

Dr. Sia has also been conducting Quality Improvement initiatives in both pregnant and non-pregnant population, on the themes of appropriateness of investigations, as well as efficiency and flow of hospitalized patients. She has presented in provincial, national and international conferences, including Choosing Wisely Canada, International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy, and International Society of Obstetric Medicine.

Teaching

Dr. Sia is an active teacher both clinically on the wards, as well as in classroom settings for Undergraduate medical students and Postgraduate trainees. As the Obstetric Medicine fellowship program director, she has trained and mentored Obstetric Internists from national and international locations.
