Overview

Research

The intent of my research is to directly contribute to the advancement of the discipline of sport management and to help prepare students for entry into its related industries. My work primarily centers on sport consumer behavior, with a particular emphasis on recreational skiing participation and the broader ski tourism industry. I focus on examining the dynamics of leisure sport participation among Chinese and Canadian consumers, paying close attention to the cultural and market differences between these contexts. This line of inquiry has led to the publication of several studies in prominent refereed journals within the field of sport management and recreation.


Teaching

As the saying goes, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn”—a phrase often attributed to Benjamin Franklin. This perspective aligns closely with my philosophy, as I believe that true learning occurs when students are actively engaged in the process. Teaching is always my top priority. At the University of Alberta and through a dual program with Beijing Sport University, I have taught five courses reflect the breadth of sport management, recreation, and tourism, spanning Introduction to Sociology of Sport and Leisure, Advanced Sociology for Sport and Leisure, leadership in Recreation and leisure organizations, Adapted Physical Activity, and Marketing for Recreation, Sport, and Tourism. I integrate real-world case studies, experiential projects, and community partnerships to prepare students for professional challenges while supporting diverse learning needs. I am also committed to mentorship, providing academic and career advising, and cultivating student growth beyond the classroom.
