Research
The ultimate goal of my research is to increase inclusivity in the field of SLP, which involves:
- Supporting culturally and linguistically diverse individuals' language and speech development. Specifically, I work to understand the multifaceted factors that influence bilingual language and speech development, such as the interaction between the learner's languages, the amount and properties of language input, age of acquisition onset, length of residence in a host country, learning motivation, cultural identity, and mental wellbeing. I also investigate the effectiveness of explicit language/speech instruction and bilingual education.
- Working as culturally and linguistically diverse SLPs. Specifically, I work to understand the lived experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse SLPs, highlight their strengths, and promote inclusivity and diversity in the field of SLP.
My current research interests include:
- Second-language speech development of child and adult newcomers to Canada.
- Language development of bilingual typically developing children and children with special education needs.
- Speech development of children who are enrolled in Chinese-English bilingual schools.
- Workforce diversity in the field of SLP in Canada.
