About
Dr. Zebib Yenus Nuru is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta. She received her PhD in Physics from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, with research on spectrally selective solar absorber nanocoatings for high-temperature concentrated solar power systems. Following her PhD, she held international research appointments and fellowships, including postdoctoral and visiting research roles in South Africa, the UK, and North America. Her work focuses on thin-film nanomaterials, protective and solar absorber coatings, materials degradation, and structure-property-performance relationships for energy and extreme-environment applications. She has led and contributed to internationally funded projects supported by the UK Royal Society, TWAS, and others, built collaborations across Africa, Europe, and Canada, and supervised & mentored under/graduate students. At the University of Alberta, her current interests include collaborative laser-based diagnostics, correlative materials characterization, and structure-property-performance analysis for understanding degradation in protective coatings and nuclear-relevant materials.
Research
My research focuses on the design, fabrication, and characterization of thin-film nanomaterials and functional coatings for energy and extreme-environment applications. I am particularly interested in protective coatings, spectrally selective solar absorber materials, materials degradation, and structure-property-performance relationships.
My work combines materials deposition with optical, structural, surface, and thermal characterization to understand how composition, microstructure, interfaces, and processing conditions influence performance and stability. At the University of Alberta, my research interests include collaborative work on laser-based diagnostics and correlative characterization approaches for studying degradation in protective coatings and nuclear-relevant materials.
