About
Dr. Zhaohui Wang joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta as an Associate Professor in the Fall of 2024. She received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 2013, and then joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Michigan Technological University as a tenure-track Assistant Professor, where she was elevated to an Associate Professor with tenure in 2019 . Dr. Wang has served in the organization committee of multiple IEEE/ACM conferences, and served as a regular reviewer for a number of premier IEEE/ACM journals and conferences. She was the Technical Program Committee (TPC) Co-Chair of the 2019 ACM International Conference on Underwater Networks and Systems (WUWNet), and has been an Associate Editor of IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society since 2019 and of Frontiers in Communications and Networks since 2020.
Dr. Wang has received multiple awards and recognitions. She is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award in 2017. Dr. Wang received the 2013 Women of Innovation Award in Collegian Innovation and Leadership from Connecticut Technology Council, the 2014 Outstanding Senior Women Academic Achievement Award from the University of Connecticut, the Outstanding Service Award from the tenth ACM WUWNet conference in 2015, the 2018 ICC Achievement Award at Michigan Tech, and the Best Paper Award in the fifteenth ACM WUWNet Conference in 2021. She was selected as an Outstanding Reviewer by the Editorial Board of IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering in 2012, 2013-2014, 2015, and 2016, 2018, 2019, respectively.
Research
Dr. Wang's research is in the area of wireless communications, with a major focus on underwater acoustic applications. Her research interests include but are more limited to
- Underwater acoustic communications and networking: channel modeling, transceiver design, multicarrier communications, mobile communications, cross-layer design, machine learning for acoustic communications and networking
- Under-ice acoustic communications and networking: under-ice acoustic channel modeling, acoustic communication and networking in sound stratified environments, mobile communication and networking in ice-covered areas
- Underwater/under-ice acoustic signal processing: background noise characterization, interference cancellation, underwater localization (GPS)
- Testbed development and field experiments
Announcements
Dr. Wang is looking for highly motivated Master/PhD students who are interested in performing the cutting-edge research and developing real systems for underwater/under-ice acoustic communications. Please send her an email along with your CV and relevant documents that can well describe your past experiences and background.
