This 4-month position has an end date of December 31, 2024. Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement.

Location - This role is in-person at Augustana Camrose.

Position 

The Department of Science at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus invites applications for a term lab instructor position in Chemistry. This position involves responsibility for teaching two lab sections in the Fall term (enrollment ~20 students/section). The course is listed as AUCHE 250 Organic Chemistry I and serves as an introduction to the bonding and functionality in organic compounds. The three-dimensional structure of molecules and the concept of stereochemistry will be examined. Infrared spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy will be applied in both the lecture and lab. This course is required in the Chemistry and Physical Sciences major and the Integrative Biology major.

Duties 

For the 2024 Fall semester, the labs will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15 – 5:15 pm. A lab manual prepared by the Chemistry lab coordinator will be available and all weekly lab materials will be prepared by technical support staff. The labs will cover an 11-week term (September 16th to December 9th, 2024). A lab final examination will be conducted at the end of the term.

Duties include:

  • Weekly preparation for lab instruction
  • Liaising with the Chemistry lab coordinator
  • Grading of laboratory assignments and exams

This position is in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) Agreement of the University of Alberta. It has an appointment from September 1 to December 31, 2024 and is subject to budgetary approval. 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be expected to hold a minimum of a Master's degree in Chemistry, preferably Organic Chemistry. Recent university teaching at the undergraduate level will be a definite asset.
