Description

The Alberta School of Business invites applications for a leader in the study of cities and communities. The successful candidate will be hired as a tenured faculty member in the Department of Marketing, Business Economics and Law at the Alberta School of Business and will be recognized as the Radhe Gupta Executive Chair in Cities and Communities for an initial 5-year term. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2025.

Responsibilities of the Radhe Gupta Executive Chair in Cities and Communities:

Extension/Engagement (industry outreach and partnership)

  • Interactions with and supporting industry in Canada and beyond leading towards stronger city and community building practices
  • Knowledge mobilization and real-world reporting to industry and government on actionable areas for growth and impact
  • Representing the U of A, the Alberta School of Business, and the Centre for Cities and Communities (and any future iterations of it) at relevant conferences, bringing influence and two-way feedback to meetings, and colloquia of importance to the sector
  • Supporting the Centre (and any future iterations of it) growth by seeking additional funding opportunities from government and private support

Facilitates Research and Applied Knowledge (mobilizing research and application)

  • Provide vision and leadership in the advancement of a world-class research program in cities and communities by attracting competitive external funding that will support a research program
  • Convening stakeholders, connecting disparate groups and assimilating forward-facing research agendas that align with industry research needs
  • Bringing industry alignment into the research agenda by co-developing multi-year areas of focus
  • Delivering the research outcomes, which will inform business decisions, to a variety of city and community building stakeholders
  • Promote collaborative research within ASoB, and build on strengths and utilize existing resources available at the University
  • Encourage career development of scholars at the ASoB, working on urban economics, real estate, urban design, and city management

Leadership and Program Administration

  • Collaborates with CCC staff to enhance and grow the number of experiential learning opportunities to students in Real Estate, Retailing, Marketing, Finance, Business Economics, etc.
  • Leads strategic and operational planning for the CCC
  • Supervises administrative staff and aligns staff activity to CCC’s strategic objectives

Teaching (innovations in real estate and business education)

  • Helps shape business and cross-disciplinary programs and courses that draw upon disciplines in business and the University, helping to diversify the pipeline of talent of real estate professionals
  • Plays an active role in the business suite of courses at the 100-400 level, including the Business capstone course
  • Teaches in the areas of cities and communities
  • In addition to the Chair responsibilities above, successful candidates will conduct research directed at top-tier real estate, urban planning, and related economics and marketing journals, take advantage of external research funding opportunities, teach in undergraduate, masters and other programs, and contribute to academic service commensurate with the level of appointment. Proficiency in English is required.

Candidates must possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • A PhD in a relevant field;
  • Significant leadership experience in an area related to cities and communities;
  • A willingness to proactively develop collaborative and fruitful relations within the Alberta School of Business and across the University’s units and portfolios;
  • A solid understanding of university environments;
  • An ability to shape research agendas that allow the university to drive forward new areas of collaborative and relevant research to city and community building;
  • A demonstrated strength in providing the necessary vision and leadership required to build a broad range of partnerships (internal and external to the university), including industry, community and government (municipal, provincial) that are crucial to supporting the goals of city and community building;
  • Demonstrated potential to publish top-level research and achieve teaching excellence.
