Working for Information Services and Technology (IST)

Information Services and Technology (IST) is the provider of IT support and services to the all the members of the University of Alberta. IST has involvement with most initiatives and is critical to the delivery of the services the University depends on.

Position 

Reporting to the Team Lead Windows Infrastructure Services, the Backup Administrator provides system administration for operating systems and applications relating to the central backup solution used by the University of Alberta for disaster recovery and business continuity purposes. The duties and responsibilities of this role include the installation, configuration and support of the various components of the central backup solution. This includes storage hardware, physical servers, and the backup software that controls the physical pieces. This role would work closely with the various teams across campus that rely on the central backup service to do things such as scheduling of backup jobs, restoration of jobs, and help with yearly disaster recovery tests. The number of servers that are currently being backed up by this service is approximately 750 and growing.

Duties 

  • Administer both the physical hardware as well as the software relating to the central backup solution
  • Works with other teams and stakeholders to perform recovery jobs in the event of an incident to ensure quick resolution and minimize data loss
  • Works with other teams and stakeholders to setup, configure and schedule backup jobs for mission critical systems
  • Technical liaison to other operational teams while they undergo required disaster recovery tests on a yearly basis

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computing Science or related field or equivalent Technical Diploma combined with relevant experience
  • Minimum 7 years of working experience with enterprise backup solutions in large and complex IT environment
  • Minimum 5 years of working with enterprise class hardware (servers and storage)

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Expert knowledge in virtualization technologies, systems security and networking
  • Programming/scripting experience with Python, PowerShell, VB scripting
