Working for the Department

The I-STEAM Pathways Environmental Education and Research Program for Indigenous undergraduate students responds to the imperative for Indigenous worldviews to be incorporated into environmental policy and practice. An experiential, cross-disciplinary learning program, it enables First Nations, Métis and Inuit students to gain research experience in a range of environmental fields, including science, environmental engineering, environmental law and policy. The program also provides a pathway to graduate studies in environmentally-related disciplines and opportunities to explore career possibilities in environment-related fields.

Position 

Reporting to the Indigenous Initiatives Strategic Officer in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CNAS), the I-STEAM Program Coordinator provides program-specific support as directed by the academic leads of the program, ensuring the effective delivery of the program. In all facets of this role, this position endeavors to integrate and advance the University’s commitments to equity, diversity and inclusivity.

Duties 

  • Provides administrative support for I-STEAM Pathways Program standing and special meetings, off-campus courses and field trips under the direction of the academic leads of the program.
  • Assists in forward planning, organizes meetings, program events, conferences, seminars, and special events on behalf of the I-STEAM Pathways program as directed by the academic leads.
  • As directed by the academic leads, coordinates documents and agendas. Anticipates and prepares supporting materials.
  • Initiates and responds to correspondence on behalf of the I-STEAM Pathways co-leads
  • Creates and maintains spreadsheets and/or databases and prepares standard and ad-hoc reports for the I-STEAM Pathways program under the direction of the academic leads.
  • Designs and develops customized reports for specific needs as directed by the academic leads.
  • Maintains area/ program records on behalf of the academic leads.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A diploma in business administration or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a post-secondary environment is preferred. Strong skills with U of A applications are required (PeopleSoft, Google, SupplyNet, Bear Tracks etc.).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, Google Apps, Adobe, and Zoom are required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) abilities; high level of interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, take initiative and work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Priority will be given to Indigenous applicants, defined under Section 35(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982 which defines Aboriginal peoples as Indian, Inuit, and Métis
  • Knowledge of and lived experience working with Indigenous Peoples
  • Demonstrated understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit learners and communities
  • Knowledge of the University of Alberta policies and procedures is preferred.
  • A background that demonstrates an appreciation for Indigenous practices, protocols, and ways of knowing
