This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

This position has a term length of 2 years, with the possibility of extension. Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement.

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

Working for the School of Public Health

The School of Public Health (SPH) is situated within the College of Health Sciences at the University of Alberta. SPH offers a course-based Master of Public Health (MPH), an MA in Community Engagement (course-based and thesis-based), and thesis (MSc and PhD) graduate programs, supported by 30 faculty members. Currently, there are approximately 320 graduate students. SPH is among the top 5 research-intensive faculties in the University.

Launched in Fall 2023, the Master of Public Health (MPH) in General Public Health is designed to equip practitioners with the knowledge and skills needed to play roles in key public health functions such as assessment, planning, action implementation, and evaluation, in governmental, non-governmental, community-based, and industry settings across sectors and jurisdictions.

The Masters of Arts in Community Engagement (MACE) includes both thesis and course-based tracts. MACE students learn about community-based research and evaluation methodologies that reflect community context, are culturally responsive and in collaboration with community partners.

Position 

The School of Public Health invites applications for a full-time, 2-year (renewable) Academic Teaching Staff position, beginning no later than September 1, 2024. The teaching load is commensurate with the guidelines set out in the ATS agreement and will be up to 6 courses per year.

This appointment requires advanced training in public health (e.g., MPH, DrPH, PhD) with a focus on public health practice leadership and community engagement combined with relevant practical experience in the field of public health. Preference will be given to candidates with experience serving in leadership roles with governmental or non-governmental organizations and using evidence to inform public health actions.

Duties 

The appointee would primarily teach in the professional practice programs in the School of Public Health, particularly the MPH and MACE degree programs. The appointee would be expected to teach in the core curriculum for the MPH and MACE degrees.

This position includes additional duties related to course coordination, curriculum revision and development of courses aimed at undergraduate students. Advising of course-based students (i.e., MPH, MACE) would be expected. There is also potential for time devoted to research and supervision of graduate students, largely through participation as a member of supervisory committees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have advanced training in the field of Public Health (e.g., MPH, DrPH or PhD) or a related discipline;
  • A minimum of 5 years of related public health experience in governmental, non-governmental, community-based, or industry settings, guiding and leading public health policy and action;
  • The candidate must demonstrate high-quality and engaged teaching for graduate courses and contribute to service and community engagement missions of the School. This includes teaching of graduate students, mentoring of colleagues and trainees, participating in School-wide planning, and the development of initiatives that improve public health in collaboration with communities, organizations, industry, and government agencies.
