In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement this position has an approximate appointment of one year plus a day with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $59,822 - $82,266.

Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

Position 

Applies extensive knowledge in their field to perform high-level, complex research activities under the direction of a Principal Investigator.  

Major activities are related to laboratory management including supervision and instruction of laboratory staff with all aspects of their research and development of new experimental techniques to meet the research objectives as defined by the PI. Additional duties include ensuring compliance with Environmental Health and Safety regulations, purchasing of all laboratory supplies, and maintenance of all laboratory equipment.

The incumbent is responsible for developing and drafting methods for grant applications and writing initial drafts of scientific manuscripts as requested by the PI.  

Duties 

• Designs individual experiments, data collection protocols and standards under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. Participates in these duties for both their own work and the work of technical staff, students, and postdoctoral fellows in the lab
• Determines the most appropriate methodology to meet identified research goals
• Oversees/conducts data collection. Conducts advanced analysis of research data and results
• Collects, analyzes, and interprets data relating to research and knowledge synthesis
• Summarizes, analyzes, and organizes data for publication. Participates in the writing of research papers, the preparation of presentations and/or other publications
• In consultation with the Principal Investigator, develops and documents research methods and protocols and troubleshoots experimental protocols
• Supervises and guides technical staff, students, and postdoctoral fellows in the lab. Responsible for in-depth understanding of all ongoing projects in the lab as well as all techniques performed in the lab. They must be able to discuss troubleshooting of experiments and provide technical assistance and guidance on optimal techniques
• Responsible for the maintenance and efficient operation of the lab (e.g, specialized lab equipment maintenance and calibration). As well as ordering of reagents and other supplies for the lab. Advise on specialized technical procedures or equipment
• Sets research activity objectives in consultation with the Principal Investigator
• Develops and carries out independent research
• Assists with the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals with varying amounts of input from the Principal Investigator
• Presents research results at laboratory meetings, departmental seminars, scientific conferences, and related settings
• Fosters communication with off-campus partners
• Participates in the scientific oversight of the laboratory; assists the Principal Investigator in the supervision of students, technicians, and other staff in the laboratory
• Performs human studies
• Train all new summer students and undergraduate trainees, lab technicians, and research fellows in lab safety, equipment operation, and lab procedures. Train and oversee all external staff that are using the equipment. Ensure all staff are wearing personal protective equipment and adhering to all environmental health and safety requirements including have been immunized against Hepatitis B for staff working with human blood

Qualifications

• PhD degree is required in Biochemistry or related subject. Equivalent education and experience may be considered
• 5+ years of extensive specialized experience in a research environment
• 5+ years of experience with ELISA, cell culture, western blotting, RT-qPCR, PCR, and Flow cytometry
• Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
• Experience in developing instruments and research proposals
• Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks
• Trained in WHMIS, TDG, chemical spills, and CHEMATIX
