Position 

The Manager, Inspections and Technical Services (ITS) is a key member of the HSE Leadership Team.  Leading a team of Health and Safety Advisors, the manager provides planning, monitoring and management of the health and safety inspections in research and other worksite spaces. Responsible for provision of laboratory and general safety technical and advisory services to the university community including chemical, biological, radiation, occupational, fire and life safety. The manager contributes to setting the strategic direction and budgets of HSE, enhancing university- wide safety practices through the Culture of Care, recruiting, managing and mentoring the ITS team, ensuring excellence in service delivery, leading large projects, managing emerging issues and building strategic relationships with clients and third party vendors.

In all facets of this role, this position integrates and advances the health, safety and environment responsibilities identified in legislation and university policy while understanding, fulfilling and promoting the University's commitments to equity, diversity and inclusivity.

Duties 

  • Contributes to the development of HSE’s strategic plan and operational priorities
  • Contributes to the development of HSE’s budget priorities
  • Develops and implements the strategic vision and plan of ITS
  • Contributes to the implementation of a Culture of Care
  • Provide laboratory and general safety technical and advisory services to the university community including chemical, biological, radiation, occupational, fire and life safety
  • Oversee and undertake laboratory safety inspections, lab close-outs and certifications
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory and university laboratory and general operation health and safety practices
  • Oversee and undertake work-site inspections and certifications
  • Oversee bio-safety cabinet and equipment certifications
  • Coordinate hazardous waste disposal and management with Environmental and Support Services
  • Oversees, leads and participates in incident investigations 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in occupational health and safety or related area coupled with minimum ten years related experience in health, safety and environmental management
  • Knowledge of HSE management systems
  • Familiarity with federal, provincial, municipal acts, regulations, codes, standards, bylaws and guidelines associated with occupational, health and safety and hazardous materials
  • Familiarity with regulatory and compliance management
  • Incident investigation procedures and report writing skills
  • Computer literacy including strong data, document and record management and reporting skills
