Working for the Department

The School of Dentistry has been at the University of Alberta since 1917 and is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the College of Health Sciences. The school serves an integral role in educating a part of the healthcare workforce in Alberta and beyond. The school offers undergraduate programs in Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, and Dental Assisting. We offer graduate programs in Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Oral Biology, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics and Periodontology. There are 24 Faculty, 42 Academic Teaching Staff (ATS), and over 200 Excluded Academic staff, that are supported by the Student & Academic Services unit.

Our Mission: Improving the health of the people of Alberta and beyond through leadership in oral/maxillofacial health care, education, research/scholarship, and providing service that is responsive to social needs.

Position 

The Instructional Support Coordinator reports to the Manager, Curriculum. This position is responsible for supporting instructional design and instructors, course development, and student support. The Instructional Support Coordinator supports a culture of quality teaching and curriculum delivery, interacting with faculty, fellow staff and students.

The role provides support in the following areas:

  • curricular and technology integration
  • program accreditation and student support
  • instructional and digital learning

Duties 

  • Provide consultation and support to faculty and students to integrate new technologies into their teaching (Google Suite, eClass, Office Suite, Zoom, .med Suite, Campus Solutions, etc.)
  • Support the introduction of new technologies within the faculty
  • Supports the creation of technical resources for delivery of online, blended and web-enhanced education
  • Develops resources (e.g., course materials, instructional videos, online quizzes, etc) to support academic staff development involving curriculum design and delivery
  • Support the Curriculum Review and Renewal (CRR) process
  • Coordinates and supports initiatives relating to the collection and preliminary analyses of data for the purposes of course delivery improvement
  • Support best practices as they relate to student and academic success
  • Provide program and learning objective mapping supports
  • Provide consultation services to academic staff on issues related to instructional practices, active learning and delivery of online, blended and web-enhanced education
  • Contribute to and attend dentistry and dental hygiene Curriculum Committee meetings
  • Guide faculty on the use of technology to deliver and support instruction (Zoom, eClass)
  • Support the ‘Curriculum for Learners’ model and teaching and learning framework
  • Promote use and awareness of resources, expertise, equipment and facilities

Minimum Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in Education or a related discipline is required.
  • Minimum two years experience in instructional design, training, and curriculum development
  • Knowledge of new and emerging teaching and learning technologies and how to integrate them into online learning
  • Effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
  • Superior writing, speaking, and communication skills
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines, multi-task, and balance numerous projects while maintaining a perspective on long-term program goals
  • Strong general technology skills with a willingness to learn new tools and software applications
  • Experience working with campus e-learning tools such as Moodle or Canvas, Zoom and Google Workplace

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Post-secondary experience in a related role (eg. supporting academic staff with instructional or curriculum delivery) is preferred
  • Experience with a website editing program such as (HTML, CSS, Photoshop, In Design) is an asset
