Position 

As a member of the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team, reporting to the Manager, Environment and Support Services, the Fleet Safety Advisor (Advisor) is responsible for the enhancement and administration of the university’s Fleet Safety Program.  Working with clients across all university campuses, including faculty, staff and students, the Advisor will utilize their fleet safety experience, communication and relationship skills to deliver a best-in-class fleet safety program while maintaining compliance with legislation, the university’s Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS) and its commitment to a Culture of Care.  Supported by a comprehensive team of health and safety professionals, the Advisor is expected to work with limited oversight to achieve objectives.   

The Advisor is responsible for monitoring and training 3200 University authorized drivers who utilize a corporate fleet of 250 university – operated (owned, leased and rented) cars, trucks, passenger and cargo vans and buses. The Advisor also provides training for ATV use and trailering.

The Advisor oversees the development, management, reporting, reviewing and auditing of fleet safety policies, programs, procedures and training to enhance the safety and well-being of all personnel who are required to drive university-operated vehicles.  This includes training, testing, and monitoring drivers while maintaining all necessary authorization and training files.  Training is delivered to approximately 300 to 500 new university drivers annually.

The Fleet Safety Advisor works directly with Faculties and portfolios to identify specific training requirements for departmental drivers.

  • Services include authorization and follow up training needs through an on-going monitoring process that includes:
  • Review and analysis of University of Alberta Protective Services vehicle/driver incident reports (including supplemental investigative action as required)
  • Consultation with the university insurer
  • Amendments to university policy and procedures and the HSEMS
  • Amendments to the university’s Vehicle Management and Driver Safety Program (VMDSP) manual
  • Compliance with federal, provincial, and state legislation, as applicable

Additionally, the position will be required to visit work sites and may be required to conduct fleet safety inspections and/or investigations. 

Duties 

  • Functions as the primary contact for the Vehicle Management and Driver Safety Program and investigates and provides follow-up reports as required. 
  • Conducts in-vehicle driver evaluations.
  • Maintains driver files as per legislation.
  • Works independently on continuous improvement processes for enhancement of the Fleet Safety Program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive, related experience in professional fleet safety roles in a comparable environment.
  • Formal certification/designation in vehicle/fleet safety programs, such as the Certified Transportation Safety Professional.
  • Class 4 driver license, or higher, is required
  • Experience consulting, engaging, and building relationships with business units to determine needs and facilitate positive cultural change in workplace health and safety
  • Experience in driver education and evaluation
  • Extensive knowledge of local, provincial and federal health and safety legislation
  • Commitment to professional development 
  • Strong team, analytical and communications skills. 
  • Acceptable driving safety record, with a driver abstract with 3 or fewer demerit points
  • Working knowledge of business software such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google applications used to conduct communications, reporting and analysis is required

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Completion of and experience in motor vehicle collision investigation, analysis or reconstruction course (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience working with insurers
