Working for Building Security Systems

The Building Security Systems shop is responsible for security technology on university campuses. 

Position 

This position supports the installation, programming, maintenance, repair, and service/support of the University of Alberta’s electronic Building Systems. Supported systems are as follows:

Access Control, Intrusion Detection, Video Surveillance, Emergency Notification and Intercoms.

Building Systems are real time monitoring and control systems installed in the majority of buildings on North, South, and Remote Campuses. The systems operate 24 hours per day. Any failure or downtime of individual components or systems may become critical with serious consequences to the building, research work and/or its occupants. 

Duties 

  • Provide installation, maintenance and commissioning services for hardware and software
  • Analyze problems occurring in or related to systems to ensure proper functionality and operation
  • Provide support including root cause analysis
  • Provide input into design solutions pertaining to existing and new installations
  • Assist co-workers with investigating, troubleshooting and problem solving technical issues relating to hardware and software
  • Using established standards, implement hardware designs and software programming to meet the intent of the project requirements
  • Validates complete system functionality and troubleshoots problems with subcontractors and other trades to ensure proper operation
  • Complete paperwork including work orders and system posting of documentation
  • Adhere to safety standards with a high degree of regard to employee and subcontractor safety
  • Ensure standards and requirements are in compliance by conducting quality assurance tests
  • Troubleshoot and repair related networks to ensure proper functionality
  • Assist in the ordering, pre-testing and installation of the various system equipment and components
  • Conduct evaluation and beta testing of new software and hardware components
  • Provide technical input into the various systems designs
  • Collaborate and coordinate the installation of the various systems and work of other UofA trades, contractors and suppliers
  • Participate in standby (after hours on-call) on a rotating basis to respond to system failures
  • Record problems, solutions and modifications for inclusion in system documentation as well as configurations of equipment
  • Provide technical and operational training with new staff as part of on-boarding 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of an Engineering or Electronics Technology Diploma, Technologist Diploma or a related area
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant trade experience working with electronic commercial or institutional building security systems
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Certified Technician (C.Tech.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) would be considered an asset
  • A certificate from a recognized Security Technician program (such as the Alarm Technician Course from Canadian Security Association) or similar electronic security system TQ certification would be considered an asset
  • Computer and networking proficiency would be considered an asset
  • Certified in any of the following Traka, Lenel, Protege, Commend, DSC, and ExacqVision
  • Experience with Linux
