Description

This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of $69,169 - $115,281.

Location - Work primarily takes place at Enterprise Square, Edmonton. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.

For over one hundred years, the University of Alberta’s Continuing Education programing has been providing learning beyond the campus and the classroom to bring adult learners a wealth of continuing education, professional development, and lifelong learning opportunities. Online Learning & Continuing Education is widely regarded among business and government leaders for its ability to provide professional education that responds to the evolving industry needs.  

Position 

Reporting to the Director of Continuing Education (CE), the Business Development Manager (BDM) will play a pivotal role in cultivating connections with business and service organizations (corporate, government, and NGO entities) to develop collaborations that align CE programs with their Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) needs. This position focuses on identifying, assessing, and executing revenue-generating initiatives related to Continuing Education programming. 

Duties 

The Business Development Manager will generate new business contacts and ensure a steady supply of business development opportunities for the CE program team to pursue. 

Revenue Generation:

  • Identify and recommend new business opportunities aligned with CE's mission.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive business plans including strategic and financial analyses.
  • Negotiate revenue agreements ensuring compliance with university legal standards. Implement revenue generation approved projects, collaborating with internal teams to maximize outcomes.
  • Provide detailed revenue and growth metrics reports.
  • Generate a growing significant revenue stream outside of turn-style enrollment.
  • Offer strategic counsel on new opportunities and market trends.

Stakeholder / Partner Engagement:

  • Proactively build and maintain networks, fostering trust with key stakeholders.
  • Cultivate partnerships with U of A faculties, industry associations, and international partners.
  • Represent CE at events, conferences, and industry networking opportunities.
  • Monitor project progress, manage risks, and communicate outcomes effectively.
  • Collaborate with other faculties on joint revenue initiatives.
  • Provide strategic advice to senior management, and key stakeholders regarding new opportunities, project status, and market trends.

Market Analysis and Strategic Planning:

  • Conduct market research and analyze economic trends in the post-secondary education sector.
  • Identify growth areas and market trends to improve revenue generation by reducing risk and capitalizing on opportunities. 

Qualifications 

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A degree in Business with relevant business development experience or a combination of education and at least 5-7 years of strongly related business development experience
  • Effective self-starter possessing strong analytical, consultation, facilitation, presentation, business development, project management, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Proven track record in product development, revenue generation, and business impact
  • Strong understanding of customer and market dynamics
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and nurture relationships as well as maintain a strong portfolio of established business networks
  • Proven ability to creatively solve problems; assessing options and implications in ways to achieve desirable outcomes and solutions
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment and at all organizational levels and disciplines
  • Thrives on addressing new challenges, creating opportunities, and establishing and meeting ambitious goals
  • Able to demonstrate strong ethical business practice
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel with a valid passport and driver's license
