This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement this position has an approximate appointment until July 31, 2026, and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $76,135 - $104,709. 

Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person.

Working for the Department

The China Institute is a high-profile research centre and university think-tank reporting directly to the Office of the Provost and Vice Provost (academic). First established in 2005 with an endowment of 37 million dollars, the China Institute has now become the largest interdisciplinary China study centre in Canada and one of the leading Institutes in North America focusing on policy studies and research relevant to China.

Position 

Reporting to the Director of the China Institute, the Research Associate will identify key research objectives and lead research activities of multiple research teams on topics related to China. The incumbent will be a member of the leadership team of the China Institute and provide leadership to the research teams of researchers, postdoctoral fellows and research assistants, including supervision, coaching, guidance and evaluation.

The Research Associate is an expert in China-Canada economic relations and China’s innovation policies and keeps up to date on issues related to China. With extensive knowledge, the incumbent will play a key role in establishing the research objectives, determining the research methodology, monitoring the milestones of research activities at the China Institute and mobilizing project findings to raise the profile of the China Institute. Researching and preparing proposals for new research activities is required. The Research Associate will also play a key role in policy studies and advising.

Duties 

  • Research
    • Working with the Director to identify and determine key research objectives of the China Institute.
    • Under the supervision of the Director, leads research projects related to the overall research objectives of the China Institute.
    • Designs, tests and evaluates research methodology and provides guidance to the research teams.
    • Oversees the data collection and analysis.
    • Publishes and presents research results in relevant venues.
    • Provides and in some cases oversees input into the China Institute various policy work and initiatives.
    • Supports the periodic convening of academic conferences.
  • Management
    • Provides direction to the research staff on research methodology, project timelines, research analysis and quality control.
    • Supervises the research teams of postdoctoral fellows, researchers, and research assistants in their research activities.
    • Works with the Operations Director on the growth and performance management of research staff members. 
    • Contributes to the annual report of the China Institute.
  • Evaluation 
    • Conducts quality analysis and assurance of the research products.
    • Ensures all research activities adhere to the university and community partner ethics and cultural protocols.
    • Serves on the reviewing committee for grant applications.
  • Knowledge Mobilization 
    • Publicize project findings to relevant audiences.
    • Identifies and assists in research contracts.
    • Advises on future research directions.
  • Public engagement 
    • Support the Director in preparation for media inquiries as needed.

Qualifications

  • PhD in a related field.
  • At least ten years of research experience in Canada-China relations.
  • Recent research experience in mainland China.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and coaching research staff.
  • Demonstrated publication experience.
