Location - Work takes place at multiple UofA sites (North Campus Edmonton, Campus Saint-Jean Edmonton, South Campus Edmonton, Augustana Campus Camrose, and other U of A locations as needed).

Working for the Department

The Emergency Management (EM) Technician is a professional position reporting to the Emergency Management (EM) Director and provides coverage when EM Director is unavailable.

This position supports the EM missions in reduction of, readiness for, response to, and recovery from incidents and emergencies that interrupt the operations of the University of Alberta regardless of location or time.

Position 

This position is responsible for supporting the development, administration and management of EM critical systems, projects and activities to support the integrated emergency management plan (IEMP) of the University. The technician is responsible for meeting specific project targets determined by the EM Director. The technician is responsible for identifying gaps and challenging existing systems in the IEMP for the purpose of continual improvement of the IEMP. The technician is also responsible for emergency response activities in support of First Responders and our Crisis Management Team.

Duties 

To support our four missions:

  • To prepare pre-identified teams of skilled and experienced responders with plans and resources, for foreseeable emergencies that will require central coordination.
  • To ensure supervisors and leaders Reduce, Ready for, Respond to,and Recover from events that could interrupt research, teaching, events, or University administration; harm the University’s reputation or the environment; or cause fatalities or serious injuries; with effective tools, training, awareness, notification and advice.
  • To support a thriving student body experience that is student-led, risk-tolerant, sustainable, and encourages community and social development.
  • To be a leader for a more resilient and less vulnerable society through education, advice, and mutual aid.

Our days are a mix of routine maintenance tasks, exploring new challenges, and customer support and engagement. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum grade 12 diploma or equivalent is required
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential
  • The ability to travel to different campuses is essential
  • Availability for response after hours and on weekends is essential
  • The ability to do light lifting and transporting training materials around campuses is essential
  • Passion for emergency management is essential
  • Technicians will typically do 10,000 steps during the workday

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed formal education in emergency management. Combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Post-secondary education in a related field is preferred
  • Proficiency in other languages is an asset
  • Proficiency in Google Suite is an asset
  • Experience in public speaking is an asset
  • Excellent stress management skill is an asset
  • Formal studies in emergency management, or equivalent, are an asset
  • Interest in and exposure to international issues is an asset
