Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton. This role is in-person.

Working for the Utilities Department

The University of Alberta owns and operates one of the largest campus district energy systems in North America. This district energy system supplies services to the University, as well as the University of Alberta Hospital, the Stollery Children's Hospital, Mazankowski Heart Institute, the Cross Cancer Institute, the Jubilee Auditorium, Canadian Blood Services and other smaller entities. This large Centralized Utility Plant is located on the southwest area of North Campus and serves the greater campus area by providing steam, electricity, compressed air, and demineralized water. The heating Plant has a steam capacity of 649,000 kg/hr. and the plant generates up to 39 MW of electricity.

Position 

The University of Alberta Utilities Department is seeking a Steamfitter for the Heating Plant operations. Working under the direction of the area supervisor/foreman, the Utilities Steamfitter is responsible for the maintenance and repair of high-pressure boilers, turbine generators, Compressed Air system, Demineralization water treatment system, associated equipment and a variety of piping systems in the Heating Plant and distribution system in the Greater Campus area. The successful candidate assists and/or completes the design, construction or modification of piping systems in conjunction with the area Supervisor and the Pressure Piping Integrity Program.

The piping systems include steam, condensate, natural gas, domestic water, sewer, chilled water, demineralized water, compressed air, and other process lines. The work is within the normal activities and functions of a Steamfitter in an industrial environment.

Duties 

  • Inspects, tests, services, and evaluates boilers, auxiliaries, piping systems and components such as heat exchangers, steam traps, valves, expansion joints, pumps, etc. on a regular basis. The inspection is carried out using industry standard procedures and certified test equipment.
  • Undertakes the construction of new projects or modification of existing equipment or piping systems.
  • Producing electronic isometric spool fabrication and layout drawings from prints and specifications.
  • Working closely with welders during fabrication and layout of piping systems.
  • Installing pumps, valves, and related equipment.
  • Acts as Owners Inspector under the requirements of the Utilities Pressure Piping Quality Management System (PPQMS).
  • Maintains adequate spare parts for critical mechanical services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education
  • Alberta Journeyman Steamfitter ticket

Preferred Qualifications

In addition, training or experience with the following is desirable:

  • Ten (10) years experience in the design, fabrication, examination and inspection of power or process piping or, be an authorized piping inspector with at least 5 years experience in design, fabrication, examination and inspection of industrial piping
  • Welding Inspector Level 1 - Canadian Welding Association
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Apps
