Working for the Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science (AFNS)

The Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science (AFNS) offers research and teachings related to the fields of Animal Science, Food Science and Bioresource, Human Nutrition and Plant Biosystems. AFNS offers undergraduate Bachelor of Science degrees in Agriculture, Animal Health, Agricultural/Food Business Science and Nutrition & Food Science each with a variety of majors. AFNS students can also pursue a course-based or thesis-based Master of Agriculture, Master of Science or PhD.

The Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science (AFNS) at the University of Alberta is a unique department, the first of its kind in North America. AFNS integrates many disciplines across Agriculture, Food and Nutrition. AFNS achieves excellence in the discovery and dissemination of knowledge with the goal of improving the health and quality of life. Disciplines range from primary production and biotechnology in plant and animal sciences, via innovative food and agri-food products, to human nutrition and wellness. The Department boasts 65 professors, 40 adjunct professors, over 230 graduate students, and more than 300 research and support staff.

AFNS includes 4 divisions: Animal Science, Plant Biosystems, Food Science and Bioresource Technology, and Human Nutrition.

Position 

The Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) in the Department of AFNS, led by Dr. Gurcharn Brar is seeking a laboratory technician to provide research support in field and laboratory activities.

Duties 

  • RNA extractions and transcriptomic analyses.
  • DNA extraction from cereal samples, including HMW DNA extraction.
  • Library preparation.
  • Developing KASP assays for a breeding program.
  • Routine genotyping of wheat breeding material with DNA KASP markers.
  • Assisting graduate students with DNA marker genotyping.
  • Indoor screening wheat breeding material with rust pathogens.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in Science, Agriculture or related field
  • Understanding of cereal research, wheat breeding, and crop science

Preferred Qualifications

  • Capable with Google applications and Microsoft Office Suite
