Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, including the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, aims to maintain its position among the top schools in North America. With a present complement of more than 65 faculty members, research in the Department is vigorous and covers all major areas of Civil, Environmental, Mining, and Petroleum Engineering. Our graduate program attracts outstanding students from the best schools worldwide and presently has an enrollment of over 500 students, including approximately 200 PhD students. The undergraduate programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering enrol close to 1000 students. The department also plays an integral role within the first-year engineering program at the University of Alberta and is responsible for instructing and coordinating the Engineering Mechanics courses consisting of approximately 1200 first-year students.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta is seeking one instructor to meet the rapidly growing instructional needs of our Engineering programs, as well as delivering first-year programming to all first-year engineering students. Reporting to the Chair, the successful candidate(s) will be tasked with instructing multiple sessions of the undergraduate Environmental Engineering courses throughout the academic year in addition to working with other faculty members in improving the course content, resources, and delivery. Delivery of other undergraduate/graduate courses will be considered based on Department need and experience. This role will be responsible for instruction for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 Academic Years and will start January 1, 2025.

Responsibilities include:

Teaching and Teaching Related (80%)

  • Instructing multiple sections of the undergraduate courses Environmental Engineering.
  • Coordinating with other section instructors regarding the course delivery and assessment methods.
  • Ensuring lectures and labs are being delivered in a meaningful and high-quality manner and working with Department stakeholders to redevelop/improve existing instructional materials to remain relevant with best practices.
  • Identify new/emerging technologies or equipment that could be integrated into Department teaching.
  • Working with the Department in the development of online resources and assessment tools.
  • Co-supervising graduate students in coordination with faculty members.

Research Support (20%)

  • Conducting and supporting research activities (the incumbent will be able to apply for and hold research funds).
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • M.Sc. or a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering or a closely related field or be in the process of being granted a Ph.D.
  • A member or licensee in good standing with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or must be a member or licensee by the appointment start date.
  • Experience teaching in a multi-cultural post-secondary environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills including an excellent ability to demonstrate professionalism.
  • Ability to create and foster a positive work culture for students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in teaching Environmental Engineering courses.
  • Experience in the development of online multimedia (videos, websites, etc.)
  • Industrial Experience

This is a one-year contract (Term 12) ATS position with the potential for renewal.
