Working for the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences (ALES)

The Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences (ALES) is looking for a dynamic, team-oriented animal health professional to support animal care and research activity in the Swine Research and Technology Centre. ALES is made up of 500+ faculty and staff, 1700+ undergraduates and 600+ graduate students. ALES is focused on teaching, research & community service in its departments and schools: Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science; Renewable Resources; Human Ecology; Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology. We have strong academic undergraduate and graduate programs, a large research infrastructure which includes 25,000 acres of farm & ranch land in key ecologies across Alberta, and high-impact research in collaboration with our partners.

Position 

The Swine Technician/Registered Veterinary Technician is involved in all aspects of supporting research surgical activity and all aspects of breeding herd care and husbandry, extending to research support when required.

Duties 

  • Pre-operative preparation of pigs, anaesthesia maintenance and monitoring during surgery, support of post-operative care including monitoring students or research staff involved in post-operative care.
  • Accurate record-keeping for billing.
  • Dispense and administer controlled drugs.
  • Assist in all aspects of swine breeding herd management.
  • Assist with research pig sales to internal users and researchers in medicine and biology.
  • Euthanasia by approved methods, as required for both humane and research reasons.
  • Maintain data collection standards for regular production and research projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered Veterinary Technologist licensed by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, and a member of good standing with the AAAHT
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated, team player
  • Basic computer skills including MS Office and Google Suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • Swine or large animal husbandry experience is an asset.
  • Experience in a research facility is considered an asset.
