The Department offers over 60 undergraduate courses annually, supporting four major undergraduate programs and final program options, almost all containing a significant laboratory component. As a result, in a given academic year, over 190 laboratory course sections are offered and supported by a team of eight Technicians and over 130 Graduate Teaching Assistants. Our graduate teaching assignment budget is over $1.1M annually.

Position

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Alberta is seeking a TA and Lab Kit Coordinator to join our Undergraduate Support Services Team. This role involves enhancing the learning experience in ECE labs by coordinating Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and managing lab kits.

Key Responsibilities:

Coordinate Grad Teaching Assistantship Assignments:

  • Working in conjunction with faculty and Associate Chair Graduate Studies develop a framework to set the criteria for assessing teaching and qualification needs in laboratories and manage the process
  • Manages the employee lifecycle (e.g. Letters of Appointment, cancellation stipends) for the Department’s Grad Student Teaching Staff (GTA)
  • Recruit, train and supervise graduate students who will assist and/or teach undergraduate classes and labs. Schedule and administrator TA training workshops at the start of each term.
  • Ensure accurate payment of TAs including timesheet review as necessary.
  • Follow the Department’s selection criteria for the assignment of TAs labs based financial need, course requirements, skills, budgetary restrictions and student availability.
  • Providing supervision, guidance and mentorship to the graduate teaching staff including providing mentoring to TA's on a variety of financial, workplace, interpersonal and other issues.

Manage ECE Lab Kits:

  • Oversee the full cycle of lab kit orders, including inventory, packing, distribution, and maintenance.
  • Improve software for order processing and collaborate with faculty for continuous improvements.

Support Instructional Team:

  • Maintain consistency across lab materials, provide input on special projects, manage course pages, and cover other support roles as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant Diploma or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Minimum 5 years working experience; experience in a post-secondary environment preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are a necessity.
  • Strong interpersonal and highly developed organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure; handle multiple tasks and changing priorities with tight time frames; plan and organize effectively.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office (especially Excel), Google Suite, PeopleSoft (HCM & Finance with some Campus solutions knowledge).
  • High problem-solving and critical thinking required skills.
  • Current First Aid Certification
  • Supervisory skills, coaching and mentoring an asset.
  • Formal or informal experience with Database development or Google Apps Script and/or Excel VB would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with project management software (Click-up or equivalent) an asset.
  • Knowledge of the University of Alberta and Faculty of Engineering policies and procedures is an asset.
