Working for Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental 

Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental is focused on addressing transportation's environmental, social, and economic aspects, cultivating sustainable and inclusive solutions for a greener future. The team's collective research work covers a wide range of areas, including the planning and design of street and highway systems, transit systems, active transportation routes, and railroads. 

Additionally, they evaluate and implement innovative technologies, traffic management strategies, sustainable transportation practices, and resilient measures to handle disruptions.

Position Summary

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks a motivated postdoctoral researcher in transportation engineering to join Dr. Karim El-Basyouny's team. Dr. El-Basyouny, Professor of Transportation Engineering and City of Edmonton Research Chair in Urban Traffic Safety, focuses on advancing remote sensing applications for digitizing roadway infrastructure.

Research opportunities include intelligent/computational design, infrastructure mapping, semantic segmentation of LiDAR data, automated travel modelling and testing, predictive control/operation, and integrating 3D stereo cameras for object detection. Research objectives encompass LiDAR mapping technologies, scanning system design, roadway and roadside measurements, and wayside feature detection.

The candidate will utilize cutting-edge research environments (software and hardware) and collaborate closely with government partners.

Duties 

  • Design experiments, research methods, data collection protocols, and standards.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate data collection, analysis, and result interpretation.
  • Assist in developing and implementing computational programs.
  • Contribute to research paper writing, presentation preparation, and publication.
  • Present findings in meetings, seminars, conferences, and related forums.
  • Facilitate communication with external partners.
  • Prepare research proposals and reports.
  • Support program-related administrative tasks.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Engineering or Computing Science with a strong focus on urban transportation.
  • Proficiency in simulations, modelling, computational design, machine learning, and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated expertise in utilizing LiDAR data for road infrastructure applications.
  • Skilled in Spatial Analysis, GIS tools, CAD, and Python programming.
  • Proven track record of refereed journal publications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, with strong self-initiative.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
