This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).
This position has an expected term length of 4 months from the date of hire.
Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for Health, Safety and Environment
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) offers the following services intended to facilitate safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible research and learning at the U of A:
- Training and Competency: online and in-person learning
- Inspection and Maintenance: Equipment and space inspection and certification
- Hazard Management advice and support
- Regulatory compliance advice and support
- Incident Management: reporting and investigation
HSE has expertise in chemical, biological, radiological, and physical safety; hazardous materials and waste management; HSE regulatory compliance and consulting, field research safety; contractor safety; and environmental protection.
Position
This opportunity will support the rollout of the U of A’s new Laboratory Closeout Project. The role will include working with the project team, research groups coordinate and complete laboratory closeouts within the Department of Biochemistry/Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. This is a 4-month term position.
Duties
- Review and/or development of hazard assessments.
- Prepare hazardous waste for disposal.
- Disposal and/or transfer of equipment and hazardous materials, disposal of non-hazardous waste.
- Communication with HSE, PIs and Departmental administration.
- Assist laboratory personnel with reconciling current inventories.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in, or having completed, a bachelor's degree in science or technology.
- Previous experience in an academic research environment.
- 1-2 years experience working in academic laboratories is preferred.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Adaptable, agile, and technologically savvy; advanced capability with Google Applications and ability to learn chemical inventory and waste software programs.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
