Working for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - Cell Biology Dept

The Cell Biology performs fundamental medical research using cellular and animal models to understand underlying mechanistic causes of the pathophysiology of human disease.

Position Summary

This is an entry-level technical assistant position in a Drosophila (fruit fly) research laboratory working with live insects (flies) including maintaining, breeding and preparing animal tissue for histological analysis by microscopy as well as assisting a senior technician with general laboratory maintenance activities and day to day safety supervision and mentoring of undergraduates working in the laboratory. 

Duties 

  • Feeding and caring for laboratory animals (fruit flies)., This involves the transfer of animals to new food as appropriate, monitoring for infestation by pests, and confirming genotypes via observation of physical and molecular characteristics (e.g. GFP)
  • Making genetic crosses (breeding) of fruit flies for specific experiments. Design, and performance of selective breeding of specific genotypes to selectively modify gene expression in tissues
  • Microsurgical dissection of organs from fruit flies for histological analysis. Recognize and isolate without damage organs from animals, tissue fixation, and use of chemical and antibody markers to recognize specific proteins/lipids
  • Imaging of prepared organ or cell samples via widefield and confocal microscopy
  • Post-image processing using advanced software, including 3D image deconvolution (HuygensPro) and quantitation (e.g. Imaris)
  • DNA, RNA and protein isolation
  • Analysis of DNA or protein via gel electrophoresis

Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc in Cell Biology with 1+ years experience (post-degree) working in a Drosophila research laboratory
