Working for the Department of Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta has a long and illustrious history dating back to the early 20th century and the ground-breaking research contributions of our first Chair, James Collip, to the development of insulin. Over the last century, biochemical research has expanded to impact diverse areas of human health and disease.

Today, our research spans a broad range of modern biochemical fields including areas like structural biology and biophysics, proteomics, enzymology, membrane protein structure and function, RNA and gene regulation, lipid signalling, systems biology, cell biology and cell imaging.

This research has shed light on fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders (including prion diseases), infectious diseases, and metabolic disorders.

Position Summary

The Department of Biochemistry is a research and teaching intensive department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. It teaches more than 2,000 undergraduate students annually and offers hands-on laboratory courses in Fall, Winter and Spring terms. Reporting to the Academic Department Manager, with significant functional supervision provided by 2 Teaching Professors, and the Department's Teaching Lecturer. The position will also regularly interact with Biochemistry Student Advisor.

The main duties of this position are related to the proper functioning of the teaching lab space, including the ordering of supplies, ensuring that teaching lab equipment is in proper working order, and preparing any necessary materials for the lab courses.

This position is also the Department of Biochemistry's designated Safety Officer. In this capacity, the main duties will include providing the necessary training to students and/or new personnel regarding lab safety protocols, training to use lab equipment, and the handling and proper disposal of lab chemicals and other materials.

Duties 

  • Administrative Support
    • Exam photocopying, preparation of teaching manuals, and lab SOPS
    • Grade entry in eClass and change of grade reporting, as well as creating eClass course sections
    • Provide information and/or direct student inquiries to the Student Advisor as needed
    • Maintains updated course statistical data for annual reports
    • Other office-related duties as needed
  • Technical Support
    • Manages inventory and equipment of teaching lab
    • Responsible for the ordering of all lab supplies and materials ·
    • Prepares reagents, equipment, and testing protocols for all student labs
    • Provides course-specific orientation of graduate teaching assistants - protocols, equipment, safety, and troubleshooting ·
    • Set up and/or continuation of student experiments outside the scheduled lab period
    • Clean up of reagents and equipment
    • Arrangement of chemical waste disposal
    • Occasionally assists teaching professors in the design of new or modified experiments and lab exams

Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc in Biochemistry or related area
  • Research and laboratory work experience
  • Good understanding of general lab safety protocols
  • Experience in the area of environmental health and safety
  • Superior communication (oral and written), organization and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal/public relations skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and understanding of UofA HSE policies
