Within UAI, International Student and Visitor Services (ISVS) works closely with internal and external partners to foster a vibrant international learning and research environment and ensure that international students receive the necessary support to thrive academically, personally and professionally.

Position 

The International Student Specialist provides immigration advising, settlement support and program development for international students. This role enhances student success by ensuring compliance with immigration regulations, fostering an inclusive campus environment and advocating for students’ needs. This position requires full and valid membership with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (RCIC certification).

Duties 

1. Student Advising

  • Provide expert immigration advising to approximately 3,400 students annually, ensuring compliance with IRCC and CBSA regulations.

  • Guide students on study permits, work eligibility, visa requirements, and post-graduation pathways.

  • Support students facing academic, financial, and personal challenges, including issues like academic probation, integration struggles, and crisis situations.

  • Advocate for students in resolving immigration-related issues, liaising with IRCC and CBSA as needed.

  • Educate employers on hiring international students and navigating work permit requirements.

  • Develop and maintain up-to-date advising materials and communications to ensure students have accurate immigration information.

  • Provide crisis support, connecting students with campus resources, mental health services, and community organizations.

2. Program Development & Delivery

  • Design and implement transition programs that help international students adapt to life in Canada and succeed at the University of Alberta.

  • Develop and deliver intercultural training for students, faculty, and staff, enhancing their ability to work effectively across cultures.

  • Create initiatives that foster interaction between international and domestic students, enhancing global learning opportunities.

  • Monitor emerging trends in international student needs and adjust programming accordingly.

  • Ensure compliance with IRCC regulations when developing student programs and services.

3. Strategic & Operational Planning

  • Update advising materials regularly to reflect immigration policy changes.

  • Advise the Director on necessary policy updates and student communications.

  • Contribute to UAI’s strategic planning, ensuring international student services align with institutional goals.

4. Staff Supervision 

  • Hire, train, and supervise temporary staff (full-time May-August, part-time the rest of the year).

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members involved in student advising and support.

Qualifications

  • Education: University degree in a relevant field.

  • Professional Certification: Registered Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) in good standing.

  • Experience: Minimum three years of related student advising experience, preferably in a post-secondary setting, and familiar with the graduate student's experience.

  • Language Skills: Second language and lived experiences in Southern and Eastern Asia are preferred.

  • Knowledge & Skills:

    • Strong understanding of immigration regulations and international student issues.

    • Expertise in intercultural communication and student development theories.

    • Strong problem-solving, advising and communication skills.

    • Ability to support diverse student populations with affirmation and respect.

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, client management software, online platforms and social media.
