Working for the Nursing Simulation Centre
The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta is one of the largest nursing faculties in the country, and unique as the only Canadian member of the National Hartford Centers for Gerontological Nursing Excellence. We have more doctorally-prepared faculty members than any other school in the west. As a pioneer in Canadian nursing education, we implemented the first Master of Nursing program in Western Canada in 1975, and began the first fully-funded Nursing PhD program in Canada in 1991.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Lab Support Team Lead of the Nursing Simulation Centre (NSC) and working closely with the NSC Executive Director and Lab Assistants, this position provides support in the area of lab setups, ordering inventory, and maintenance of clinical laboratory equipment in addition to assisting with administrative duties, special projects, and day-to-day operations of the NSC.
This position responds to student and faculty requests and inquiries related to Nursing Simulation Centre services and resources and acts as liaison for internal/external contacts. The incumbent also coordinates audio-visual support for lab teaching. This position is required to work the full range of lab teaching hours as needed, which may include some evenings and weekends.
This position acts as backup for the Team Lead (NSC Lab Support) in some areas, such as scheduling, and assists with developing or updating policies and procedures.
Duties
- Provide leadership, training, and guidance for lab assistants in the Nursing Simulation Centre (NSC)
- Records and develops daily and weekly lab schedules, coordinating equipment needs and other considerations (e.g., simulation schedules, tours, special bookings).
- Prepares and dismantles lab equipment, including manikins, IV arms, and reservoirs; cleans, drains, and stores items appropriately for the next use.
- Ensures lab spaces are clean, orderly, and fully stocked (e.g., sharps containers, bed linen, hand sanitizer, gloves, paper towels, diagnostic supplies).
- Moves furniture, mannequins, and equipment as required.
- Assists instructors with setups for lab sections according to the Lab Maps
- Provides assistance to the Executive Director, NSC with special projects and potential revenue-generating initiatives, as needed.
- Provides direct support to the Lab Support Team Lead
- Reviews and updates lab guides, equipment requests, and course materials; monitors and suggests updates for file management and learning management systems.
- Moves through the lab for an extended period of time setting up learning resources including the lifting of heavy linen bags, Nursing Kelly mannequins, and displays (minimum 50lbs).
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma required
- Excellent working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word and Access), Zoom and Google
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills (oral and written)
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment (i.e., adaptable to change, flexible, and ability to independently solve problems as they arise)
- Familiarity with audio-visual equipment and Smart Classrooms
- Sound knowledge of purchasing, budgeting, and financial practices
- Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
- Able to safely lift a minimum of 50lbs
Preferred Qualifications
- Business or office administration training and/or experience
- Working knowledge of WHMIS, TDF, fire security, and building security
- Experience with SupplyNet
- Experience in a clinical setting
