Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Position

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Master's Programs and Executive Education, the Manager, Master's and Executive Education Office, leads the development of policies, strategies, programs and frameworks with course-based graduate programs and Executive Education. The Manager is accountable for making decisions on the effective and efficient design and delivery of the Office's programs and services at both the main north campus location, Enterprise Square, and programs delivered internationally. The Manager is responsible for a team of front-line supervisors and support staff and serves as an expert strategic leader to academic leadership, faculty, staff and/or the general public on program/ service policy and process. The role is expected to operate as a second-in-command for when the Associate Dean is unavailable.

Duties

Operational Management and Strategic Leadership

  • Provides managerial and professional expertise and know-how to the development, maintenance and operation of an academic program and related student services.
  • Identifies operational challenges, evaluates current business processes for efficiencies, and recommends changes.
  • In conjunction with a Service Partner (Finance), manages the finances for the academic programs and student service completes yearly and long-term budget planning for academic programs, related services and Executive Education.
  • Determines and sets key metrics for the program or service; evaluates performance and makes adjustments.
  • In conjunction with a Service Partner (Communications), develops, compiles or writes communications for distribution; may include reports, briefs, translations, newsletters, or brochures.
  • Develops and monitors an effective business continuity plan for services provided by the Office, including but not limited to incorporating process and technological improvements that support the efficient operation of student services.
  • Assists academic leadership with all levels of planning for the specific academic program or service.
  • Leads business planning for the program or service; contributes to the academic plan.
  • Organizationally aware; expected to recognize and understand the diverse and sensitive context in which the program or service operates.
  • Supports program governance by consulting with key stakeholders, managing documentation and tracking progress.
  • Ensures enrollment targets are met by developing strategies and implementing actions for various applicant pools, in collaboration with central recruiting efforts and through joint programs with other faculties.
  • Plans and delivers new programming initiatives as well as recommends the revitalization or sunsetting of under-performing programs.
  • Identifies and recommends responses to emerging issues that affect the program or service.
  • Responds to individual concerns or issues brought forward by faculty, staff, students and/or other stakeholders; uses expertise to interpret policy/procedure.

Talent Manager and Capacity Building

  • Identifies, acquires, manages and supports collective and individual talent; proactively identifies and plans for future talent needs.
  • Develops the talents of staff; builds capacity and capability.
  • Creates an environment where diverse ideas, perspectives, and achievements are recognized, rewarded and celebrated.
  • Understands the link between individual performance and University performance.
  • Establishes clear performance expectations for individuals; measures and address performance regularly and recognizes achievement.

Relationship Manager

  • Ensures a high level of service to students, clients and participants.
  • Maintains a productive relationship with the Faculty/Area office; works collegially with other managers.
  • Maintains an intimate understanding of the University in the interest of building productive and effective ongoing relationships and developing a network at all levels of the organization.
  • Works closely with FGPS and the Registrar's office to ensure alignment of university and program policies.

Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree or a Bachelor's degree with a combination of significant experience may be considered.
  • Five or more years of senior-level management experience in leading and supervising staff.
  • Knowledge and experience with the University of Alberta academic regulations, including admissions, records, registration, evaluation and grading procedures, examinations, academic standing and appeals, and grievances is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Executive Education market.
  • Understanding of the adult learning environment.
  • Experience initiating and leading innovation and change.
  • Ability to connect and interact with senior-level leaders in business and government.
  • Technological and software proficiency, including data analysis and project management software, word processing, online communications and other applications.
  • High level of analytical and problem-solving skills and critical-thinking skills.
  • Planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Identifies key influencers and creates and uses internal and external networks to shape objectives and build support for ideas, initiatives and directions.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with team members from different areas of expertise, and with senior administrators in an organization.
