This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Position

The Department of Music, in conjunction with the Department of History, Classics, and Religion, is seeking to hire a full-time Term 12 appointment at the rank of Assistant Lecturer to teach across the music and religious studies programs. The successful candidate will also be expected to conduct research and participate in the activities related to the Belzberg Professorship in Jewish Studies.

This is a three-year position, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Duties

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach 6 courses annually across Fall and Winter terms, drawing from both Music and Religious Studies.
  • Design courses that contribute to both the Music and Religious Studies programs in areas such as music and religion, Jewish music, and music and disability.
  • Develop an independent research program that will result in scholarly output commensurate with rank and experience.
  • Contribute to the community engagement activities related to the Belzberg Professorship in Jewish Studies.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology or a related field with specialization in Jewish music.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses in Music and Religious Studies, such as world music, Jewish music, music and religion, or music and disability.
  • Ability to lead both large lecture classes and smaller seminar-style courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to innovative and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Ability to contribute to the History program is an asset.
