Working for the Faculty of Engineering
The University of Alberta nanoFAB, a $100M open-access service facility, is a trust-funded and revenue-generating unit of the Faculty of Engineering that strives for administrative and financial sustainability. The nanoFAB caters to the micro/nano fabrication and characterization needs of a community that consists of greater than 300 academic and industrial groups and over 800 individual users. The mission of the nanoFAB is to empower researchers and companies to create new technologies through building and seeing at the smallest scales.
Position
The primary responsibility of the Process Trainer is to deliver high-quality, hands-on training to new and existing users of the nanoFAB’s micro/nano fabrication and characterization equipment. This position ensures that users are properly trained to operate tools in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety guidelines, and nanoFAB policies.
The Process Trainer will work independently to manage their schedule and coordinate training sessions, helping to maintain a well-trained user base that can operate equipment effectively and safely. Unlike other technical roles within the nanoFAB, this position does not involve research, process development, tool commissioning, or equipment maintenance. As a secondary focus, this role may also provide educational support services for technical courses offered through the nanoFAB and contribute to fee-for-service projects as required.
Duties
- Conduct hands-on training sessions for new and existing users on assigned micro/nanofabrication and/or characterization tools.
- Assist in monitoring tool usage logs and user feedback to identify potential training gaps.
- Independently manage and schedule training sessions to balance training request demand and tool availability.
- Maintain records of completed training sessions and user qualification using online laboratory and learning management systems.
- Maintain and update SOPs, processing guidelines, online training resources, and other instructional materials in collaboration with other nanoFAB staff.
- Maintain a safe work environment and culture, reporting all safety and disciplinary actions as they arise.
- Support fee-for-service projects as required, leveraging expertise in tool operation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Technical diploma in Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 2 years of hands-on experience working with micro/nano fabrication and/or characterization equipment.
- Strong teaching, communication, time-management, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience with both micro/nano fabrication and characterization equipment.
How to Apply
Please submit a cover letter and resume as a single document in PDF format. In your cover letter, please include your hands-on experience in micro/nano fabrication and characterization, specifically wet chemical processing, lithography, plasma etching, thin-film deposition, and scanning electron microscopy.
