This position offers a comprehensive benefits package. A 15.6% market supplement will be added to the annual salary. Including this supplement, the salary range is $90,970.41 to $127,688.40.

Working for the Utilities Heating Plant

The University of Alberta owns and operates one of the largest campus district energy systems in North America.  This energy system supplies services to the University, as well as the University of Alberta Hospital, the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the Cross Cancer Institute, the Jubilee Auditorium, Canadian Blood Services and other smaller entities.  This large Centralized Utility Plant is located on the southwest area of North Campus and serves the greater campus area by providing steam, electricity, compressed air, and demineralized water.  The heating Plant has a steam capacity of 649,000 kg/hr. and the plant generates up to 39 MW of electricity.

Position Summary

The University of Alberta Utilities Department is seeking a Heating Plant Shift Supervisor (Shift Engineer) for the Heating Plant Operations.  The Shift Supervisor is responsible for directing and coordinating the safe and efficient operations of the University Heating Plant on a 12-hour rotating shift schedule with the assistance of the Heating Plant Operators (Assistant Shift Engineers).

Duties 

  • Takes responsibility for the continuous supervision of a shift in the Heating Plant under the supervision of the Utilities Services Manager and Heating Plant Day Supervisor;
  • Operates and maintains the Heating Plant with the assistance of the Heating Plant Operator II (‘s);
  • Responsible for making decisions regarding the safe and efficient operation of all plant equipment;
  • Delegates work and responsibility as required and oversees all aspects of the work and training of the plant operators to ensure that they can perform their duties correctly and safely and that the services provided to Greater Campus Area customers meet or exceed University standards; coaches and mentors employees to improve and maintain performance;
  • Responsible for making frequent operational changes as required to maintain the efficient operation of plant equipment;
  • Conducts routine and regular on-site checks of operating and standby equipment in order to assess their current condition and availability;
  • Responsible for monitoring temperatures, pressures, steam and electrical loads closely and takes immediate remedial action when process parameters deviate from normal parameters;
  • Assists in the recognition of unsafe conditions and makes decisions and/or gives direction in a crisis or stressful situation; and
  • Analyzes equipment performance by monitoring log sheets, DCS screens and charts; brings forward any abnormalities or issues to the attention of Plant Management and brings forth recommendations for resolution as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma and a Second Class Power Engineer’s Certificate registered with the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) is required;
  • Two-year technical diploma in Power Engineering Technology from NAIT, SAIT or other comparable technical institution is desirable;
  • 5 years’ experience supervising power engineers in a large industrial setting; power plant operating experience in an industrial setting preferred; and
  • Strong leadership skills and superior technical and operating ability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a Supervisory Development course is an asset;
  • Central Control room operating experience is an asset;
  • Knowledge and experience with a modern DCS system is an asset; and
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Apps.
