Working for the Department of Medicine

The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta with over 250 academic faculty members and over 400 trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents).The Department of Medicine's core mission is to undertake outstanding education, research and high-quality clinical care to provide the best possible health outcomes for Albertans. Position Summary

The candidate will work under the supervision of the principal investigators on various studies.  This includes a funded IBD implementation study.  The research associate will work directly with Principal Investigators to coordinate research projects and work as part of a multidisciplinary research team within the Division of Gastroenterology.

Duties 

  • Responsible for preparing drafts of research protocols based on project goals for approval by principal investigator
  • Responsible for completing comprehensive literature searches for draft research studies
  • Responsible for designing study documents (eg. informed consent forms)
  • Responsible in designing and maintaining data collection sheets using electronic database program (Redcap)
  • Works alongside principal investigators to prepare research ethics protocols and applications for submission to Research Ethics Boards
  • Responsible for reviewing outpatient charts in EMR system as part of study protocols for inclusion/exclusion criteria
  • Responsible for screening outpatient charts in EMR system to determine eligibility for enrolment into studies in accordance with ethics approval

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science, or similar) in a related field of science 
  • Computer proficiency with MS office
  • Excellent writing and critical thinking skills
  • Strong interviewing skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work autonomously with little supervision and within a multidisciplinary research team with students, co-investigators and other independent researchers
  • One to two years of experience in same or similar position
  • Knowledge of electronic databases (RedCap)
  • Has worked in a medical background
  • Trained in EMR system (ConnectCare)
  • Excellent language, writing and communication skills are a necessity
