Working for the Department of Critical Care Medicine
The Department of Critical Care Medicine is a dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care, impactful research, and comprehensive critical care education. Our faculty, renowned for their expertise, provide training and conduct research in various critical care units across the Edmonton area.
Position Summary
This position is diverse and complex, requiring familiarity with standard procedures and protocols for day-to-day research operations, as well as the development of new procedures and techniques, and independent problem solving in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. The position may provide a range of research support services, including (but not limited to) contract and ethics submissions; study setup, conduct, and closeout. The position requires expertise and leadership in developing and managing relationships with a wide network of stakeholders to ensure engagement and support of initiative as well as overseeing network activities. Work is done independently with minimal supervision.
Duties
- Protocol Management - Facilitates set-up and activation of a variety of studies within the General Systems ICU at the University of Alberta Hospital, including legal document submission/completion, administrative and operational requests, ethics application and submission, coordinating pharmacy, laboratory services, PIs/Co-PIs and sponsors
- Participant enrollment - Conducts screening via ConnectCare and recruitment of potential study participants; including obtaining consent, randomizing participants to their treatment group, ensuring they receive the protocolized treatment, and performing study specific assessments as required/appropriate
- Training new staff - Act as the first line of communication and direction on a daily basis for research staff. Has an intimate knowledge of each prospectively recruiting study as well as the ability to problem solve in the moment regarding situations that may arise regarding recruitment (consent, eligibility criteria), and technological issues
- Research Finance - Advise the Principal Investigator with respect to expenditures (ex; pharmacy fees, coordinator hours to the project) and coordinate billing and invoicing for each study according to study budgets/contracts with the Operations Support Assistant
- General administration for the department research office.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree in Biological Science, Epidemiology, Health Sciences; equivalent combination of clinical research experience and education may be considered;
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience with clinical trials;
- Certification in ICH GCP and Health Canada Division 5 required;
- Completion of the NACTRC research coordinator course is considered an asset;
- Completion of Society of Clinical Research Associate (SOCRA) certification considered an asset;
- Previous experience recruiting patients and research experience involving patients;
- Must be comfortable entering the ICU;
- Experience in a hospital setting and knowledge of hospital workflows/structures an asset;
- Ability to use ARISE and NACTRC portal systems;
- Ability to use electronic medical record systems (Connect Care, Netcare, etc.);
- Computer proficiency using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook);
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills;
- Ability to problem solve in a fast-paced environment;
- Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision;
- Ability to coach and train new employees;
- Precise documentation skills/detail-oriented;
- Ability to work efficiently in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services policies and procedures.
