Position Summary

The Indigenous Administrative role within the University of Alberta’s Department of Family Medicine presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to advancing the Pathways to Healing: Indigenous Perspectives on Family Medicine Training report. This position requires direct experience with Indigenous communities and/or health settings, along with a deep understanding of the cultural, health, treaty rights, and historical challenges faced by urban and rural Indigenous peoples. The successful candidate will demonstrate a humble willingness to learn and engage with the Indigenous experience in Canada in a respectful and open manner.

In this role, the candidate will be responsible for a variety of administrative, coordination, and community engagement tasks, working collaboratively across multiple teams, engaging with Indigenous communities, and promoting the integration of Indigenous perspectives into family medicine education, all while demonstrating strong administrative skills.

In collaboration with the Indigenous Physician Lead, Residency Program Director, and the Assistant Program Director for Rural Family Medicine, the Indigenous Administrator will play a key role in supporting and advancing initiatives that enrich the educational experiences for family medicine residents and students, particularly in Indigenous contexts. This dynamic role requires an individual who is passionate about advancing Indigenous health education and fostering an inclusive, respectful, and impactful learning environment for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.

Duties 

  • Support the Indigenous physician lead and residency program to advance the work of the Pathways to Healing: Indigenous Perspectives on Family Medicine Training report through the following:
    • Respond to inquiries and determine the appropriate action required;
    • Draft, edit, proofread and format routine communications and documents; manages the correspondence for the program;
    • Create a tracking system to follow up on all inquiries and tasks related to the training report;
    • Assist in identifying potential Indigenous communities for clinical experiences;
    • Work with First Nations, Metis settlements and Indigenous organizations for collaboration on clinical experiences for family medicine students and residents;
    • Create, update and maintain department contact lists and areas of interest regarding Indigenous health engagement with the community;
    • Organize and attend meetings with key stakeholders;
    • Travel to communities and participate in Indigenous lead gatherings;
    • Models community relationship building protocols, practices, cultures and values when with with/in Indigenous communities/peoples;
    • Assist in developing and updating policies and procedures for Indigenous health learning;
    • Coordinate travel arrangements for the supervisor and others when travelling for area/program business for recruitment purposes.
  • Work directly with Family Medicine residents to support Indigenous learning experiences
  • Support the work of the Assistant Program Director – Rural and other Residency Program rural physician leaders as needed
  • Collaborate with the other Residency Program Administrators to support residency program general administrative duties as needed
  • Assist with resident interview scheduling
  • Assist the education team in planning accreditation 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma plus supplemented post-secondary diploma or undergraduate degree; Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered;
  • Minimum 3-5 years of related office experience, preferably in an academic setting;
  • Knowledge of community relationship building protocols, practices, cultures and values when working with/in Indigenous communities/peoples;
  • Computer proficiency using all Google applications and remote meeting platforms (Zoom);
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) including a strong ability to demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality and diplomacy;
  • Ability to develop and maintain trusting and respectful working relationships;
  • Adaptable, solutions-focused, ability to troubleshoot and take initiative;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while managing competing priorities;
  • Excellent organizational and critical thinking skills. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A high level of Indigenous cultural acumen to ensure cultural protocols are observed and implemented;
  • Cultural awareness of the Indigenous peoples of Alberta and familiarity with Indigenous communities;
