This competition is open to post-secondary students at the University of Alberta only.

This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

This position has a term length of two years from the date of hire and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for the Kule Folklore Centre (KuFC)

Collecting, sharing, and preserving culture – The Kule Folklore Centre (KuFC) at the University of Alberta has a research-based focus that connects the Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Canadian communities on a global scale. Based upon endowments and archives existing since the 1980s, the Kule Folklore Centre is a permanently endowed institution and is home to Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives (BMUFA).

Position

The incumbent will work in a Ukrainian Canadian Folklore library within the Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives, Kule Folklore Centre, Faculty of Arts.

Duties

  • Maintaining the BMUFA library.
  • Unpacking and sorting incoming shipments of books and other material; completing physical processing of BMUFA library materials (applying labels, bookplates, and identification stamps).
  • Searching the BMUFA to identify existing holdings & next steps for new acquisitions and problematic items (damaged, not in catalogue); creating item records in the library database for new holdings.
  • Managing and marketing the KuFC Marketplace site, sending purchases out to buyers.
  • Digitization of materials, as required.
  • Maintaining archival collections and storage, as required.
  • Assisting the Permanent Archival Assistant, as required.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current post-secondary student.
  • Background in archival science, folklore studies, or information management is desirable.
  • Familiarity with Ukrainian Canadian history and culture is desirable.
  • Reading knowledge of Ukrainian or another Slavic language that uses Cyrillic is preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Comfort with technology and software.
  • Ability to learn fast.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives and its operations is preferred.
