Working for the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta with over 250 academic faculty members and over 400 trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents).The Department of Medicine's core mission is to undertake outstanding education, research and high-quality clinical care to provide the best possible health outcomes for Albertans. Position Summary
The position will involve aid in recruitment of research study subjects including patients with stroke and controls that meet study inclusion and exclusion criteria; collection of a research blood sample; and initial processing of the collected blood samples. Information regarding recruited patients will be recorded in a study database.
Duties
Patient Recruitment (50% of time)
- Screen identified patients to enroll in the study based on study inclusion and exclusion criteria
- Obtain written informed consent
- Collect research blood sample by phlebotomy, initial blood sample processing
- Collect clinical and other study data through subject interview and clinical record review
- Participate in the discussion with principal investigator to determine the diagnosis for each study subject considering their medical history, neuroimaging, and test results
- Attend patient follow-up visits
- Conduct study procedures within the required timelines outlined in the study protocol
- Knowledge of AHS / UofA confidentiality regulations and Good Clinical Practice Guidelines
Clinical Data Management and Administrative Duties (35% of time)
- Obtain information to complete the Clinical Research Form
- Enter collected data into the study databases (REDCap)
- Knowledge of REDCap, eClinician, NetCare, Microsoft Office is an asset
- Ensure proper documentation for each subject recruited is filled out and securily stored
Laboratory Tasks (15% of time)
- Aliquot collected blood samples and label for storage
- For select samples aid with immune cell isolation from collected whole blood
- Experience operating centrifuge and pipettes
- Adheres to biological and chemical lab safety requirements for working with human samples
- Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work environment
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-secondary education of a Bachelor’s degree with up to 18 months to become functional in the role.
- University degree or lab diploma in Science, Genetics, Biochemistry or a related field
- Knowledge of phlebotomy an asset
- Experience with laboratory pipettes, centrifuge, work with cells is an asset
- Knowledge of biological and chemical lab safety requirements for working with human samples
Preferred Qualifications
- People skills to collaborate with others and work well in a team; ability to work independently when required
- Good communication skills with a variety of persons including patients who have neurological disorders and their families
