Working for the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta with over 250 academic faculty members and over 400 trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents). The Department of Medicine's core mission is to undertake outstanding education, research and high-quality clinical care to provide the best possible health outcomes for Albertans. Position Summary
The Communications and Marketing Specialist supports high-impact innovation Institute and Centre within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry: the iSMART (a state-of-the-art health research institute) and ST Innovations (a business-facing commercialization hub). This full-time, grant-funded role is based at the University of Alberta’s North Campus in Edmonton.
Reporting to the Executive Director/Principal Investigator, the Specialist is responsible for developing and executing marketing and communication strategies that promote each centre’s brand, engage diverse audiences, and enhance visibility nationally and internationally. This includes leading digital content creation, media relations, stakeholder engagement, and event promotion. The successful candidate will bring strong writing skills, a strategic mindset, and an ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, research-intensive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead communication and marketing strategies aligned with iSMART and ST Innovations' annual plans and strategic goals
- Develop and execute content for websites, social media, press releases, reports, and promotional materials
- Manage and update project websites (smartnetworkcentre.ca and stinnovations.ca), ensuring consistent branding and messaging
- Build relationships with media, researchers, industry, and other stakeholders to support outreach and engagement
- Design and implement campaigns and advertising efforts across digital and traditional platforms
- Oversee public relations, including event promotion, iSMART Talks, tours, and crisis communications
- Collect and analyze marketing data to improve campaign effectiveness and inform strategy
- Coordinate planning and execution of events, surveys, and grant reporting deliverables
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
- Minimum 5 years of experience in communications, marketing, or public engagement
- Demonstrated ability to develop content for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience managing websites and social media for organizations or public initiatives
- Skilled in digital communications tools including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign and Photoshop)
- Strong writing, editing, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a research, post-secondary, or healthcare innovation environment
- Knowledge of business communications and web content best practices
- Familiarity with marketing analytics tools and business intelligence platforms
- Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and with minimal supervision
- Experience liaising with stakeholders from academia, industry, and government
- Proven capacity to work in both collaborative and self-directed environments
