Working for the Department of Medicine
The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta with over 250 academic faculty members and over 400 trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents).The Department of Medicine's core mission is to undertake outstanding education, research and high-quality clinical care to provide the best possible health outcomes for Albertans. We have 14 divisions that work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary, multicultural and ethnically diverse collegial environment.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will join Dr. Marcet’s laboratory at the Alberta Respiratory Centre (ARC), a vibrant and collaborative research environment within the University of Alberta. ARC fosters a culture of intellectual exchange, where trainees and faculty engage in meaningful scientific dialogue and pursue innovative, multidisciplinary collaborations.
The candidate will benefit from equitable access to state-of-the-art core facilities, including centralized platforms for flow cytometry, advanced imaging, and proteomics. Comprehensive training and support will be provided through weekly ARC meetings focused on research progress and problem-solving, as well as regular one-on-one mentorship sessions with supervisors.
As part of the Department of Medicine, the candidate will have opportunities to present their work at the Department of Medicine Research Day and ARC Research Day, gaining valuable experience in scientific communication. To cultivate critical thinking and broaden scientific perspectives, trainees will participate in monthly journal clubs, student-led research seminars, and weekly lectures delivered by internationally recognized experts.
Duties
- Maintain mammalian cell lines and conduct cell culture experiments
- Prepare specimens for and conduct fluorescent microscopy followed by data analysis
- Conduct bioinformatics analysis and molecular modelling
Qualifications
- A recent graduate from the Laboratory Research and Biotechnology program (NAIT) or equivalent with laboratory training in all duties
- Experience in all-atom modeling and bioinformatics tools for sequence analysis is considered an asset.
